Great Memories

As I was cruising through the grocery store aisles on the weekend, I took a short cut through the baby food section to get to the meat deli. As I walked down the aisle, I couldn’t help but notice the Heinz baby food bottles which immediately reminded me of the days we used to buy all those bottles for our children shortly after they were born.

It constantly amazes me how little things like this can bring such a joy to our hearts as we reminisce about the good ol’ days where our kids thought that their parents were real life heroes… Now my kids know better! I remember the days when we used to feed our children more on their faces than in their mouths.

We taught our daughter certain American Sign Language signs before she actually started speaking. They became quite handy while we were feeding her since, with food in her mouth, she would have been unable to speak. If she wanted more, all she had to do was sign for “more.” If she was finished, she simply would sign “finished.”

There was one time when a baby sitter was feeding her when our daughter, having enough, signed “enough.” The babysitter not realizing what our daughter was saying continued to put the food into her mouth. Our daughter became quite upset until the sitter gave up feeding her. Later on, when we arrived home, the sitter reported to us this incident where we, upon laughing, explained to the sitter what our daughter was trying to communicate.

Memories… Memories that we will remember for a lifetime. Memories that will come to us at times when we least expect it. Looking at old photos, reminiscing in conversation or simply walking down a grocery store aisle…Great memories!

I would never have thought that at my age, I'm still buying that baby food...ah yes, the memories of buying it for my own kids so many years ago. And wow its' expensive now.

why do old memories stay as pleasant ones and recent ones not as sweet as them?

Dontcha kinda wish there was blogging when our kids were tiny?!!

I recently had a baby in my house for the weekend; the babyfood comes in little plastic-y cups with peel-off lids...sort of like something that fast food sauce would come in. I wondered about the demise of babyfood jars; what would our fathers put their nuts and bolts and nail in?!

Memories can happen at the weirdest places or from hearing a phrase or a song. Even a certain smell can bring back a memory. Good post - I enjoyed this Dave.

You're too sweet! I don't miss anything about those days. The total dependency was tiresome to me. I couldn't wait for my daughter to be an adult, but I guess that's genetic. My mother said the same thing about my brother and me. And now we are all adults and can cut our own steaks.

Now, that's pretty amazing - teaching your children to sign before they can speak!

Yes, I certainly remember those little glass jars of baby food! I often used them for small nails or brads and other things in my basement - they were handy for lots of things when we cleaned them out.

Liked your hat! I wear a similar hat which, yes, looks a bit crazy but it is warm. Out here in cold country Iowa, warm is what counts and appearance goes by the wayside!

Take care.

Our youngest grandson has been taught signing, great isn't it? The memories of when our children were young are so good to remember. :)

Yep - another post that triggers some priceless memories. I've still got the photos in some cases.

Nice one, Dave.

Funny, I've been reading Stephen Kings, "On Writing: A memoir of a craft" where he recants memories about a babysitter who fed him too many fried eggs and the not so attractive end result. It was sad and hilarious at the same time.

If you get the chance, you should read it.

Nice memories and your kid is smart. Sometimes when I listen to old music, fond memories will come back to me and I would bring myself back to that year and recall those nice and sweet memories about what I was doing and what my kids were doing back then, etc. Nice post.

Certain things really bring us good memories and we often used to associate a certain product with those fond memories. Nicely written. Have a nice day!

I have a little memory item of my own. It is a baby food processor. I used it one time to make baby food and found out that babies don't like real food they want baby food. I now use it for little processing jobs. The little one I bought it for is now 26. Wow does time fly.

Thanks for visiting my blog too.

Memories......our two daughters grew up, moved out when they got married and we are now an empty nest. But I am blessed to be able to take care of our grandson while his parents work. He is growing up faster than our girls did. So again, I will hold on to the memories.

That's a great sentimental story. I think it's awesome that you taught your daughter sign language when she was a baby. That reminds me of Robert DeNiro in Meet the Fockers when he was teaching his grandson sign language. Hilarious!
