Japan Airlines

Okay… Okay… I just couldn’t resist! In Light of Lone Grey Squirrel’s Post regarding Singapore Airlines, (Singapore Girl in Blue) I just had to submit one of my favourite regarding Japan Air Lines… I was going to post this next week but I thought “What the heck… I might as well add it to LGS’s!”

I am not going to go into too much detail suffice it to say that … well…. Anyways, you should get the point if you have read LGS’s post and comments on Saturday, February 17, 2007. If you have not read it, you might want to read it first.

The topic, of course is, Using Females to Sell Products. So… what do you think? Do you think it probably worked back in the sixties when this showed up in a National Geographic Magazine?

I'm sure it did Dave...unfortunately. Wonder how the girls feel about it now...one wonders too what did the company feel their worth was in terms of money or was that an added slap in the face...

I'm sure it worked! It has great appeal to the 'sophisticated traveler'...the businessman who loved the idea of being pampered by a lovely young woman. And only the words and photos have changed, but the tactic is such a part of our media today.

Hmm. Sorry to pre-empt your post. You sure have some interesting archival material like this Japan Airlines Ad. Still trying to weakly defend myself, the Singapore Girl photos were works of art. I wonder if I convinced any one. :))

Off subject, but I thought you would like to know the History Channel is having a special program on tomorrow night:

Star Trek: The future and beyond
The History Channel
Monday night Feb 19th (8 or 9pm, check local listings for your time)

It's about how Star Trek has influenced pop culture and covers the whole franchise. Hosted by Lenorad Nimoy.

I hope he won't break into song about Bilbo Baggins again, sheesh!

From the Using-Women-to-Sell-Products file:

On the way to the cottage last weekend I saw a billboard on the highway touting a restaurant. The picture to go with it?

A woman's thigh. She is wearing those thigh high stockings. Into the stocking are tucked a fork, spoon and knife...

I have no problem at all with the idea of scantily clad women selling lingerie. But cutlery tucked into a stocking to sell a restaurant? Not so much.

Hmmmm There's a blog in that somewhere.

Again, the question isn't whether it works, as it clearly does, but whether it is okay to use women to sell things. I have to say, I don't much like it. Like the ones on LGS's post, these aren't outrageous, just a mild part of a damaging-to-women trend. Do they show a photo of a male flight attendent smiling seductively? No. I think the idea they want to porttray is that if you (the male customer) flies, you'll have some pretty woman fawning over you, and not because she's being paid but because she just adores you.
