Vienna Teng

My daughter has never really latched on to what some would call “mainstream vocal artists.” Time and time again, she has purchased CDs of musicians who a lot of us have never even heard of. Modest Mouse, Lifehouse and Björk are just a few of her favourite selections. Through her influence, I have become attached to certain musicians that had it nor been for her, I would have never considered.

A few years ago, she started listening to an artist by the name of Vienna Teng, a San Fransisco based Taiwanese-American pianist and singer-songwriter. After purchasing Vienna Teng’s first CD, Waking Hour (2002) for my daughter, I soon became caught up in what I would describe as beautiful music. It didn’t take long before I bought her second CD, Warm Strangers (2004) and just in the past year pre-ordered her third CD, Dreaming Through The Noise (2006) months before its release date. One day, while listening to her music I decided that if one could fall in love simply by listening to a person’s music, I might have fallen madly in love with her years ago!

I have just been looking for a concert of Vienna Teng’s to take my daughter to and I think I have finally found one. It’s not a local concert and will take about 4 hours to drive to but I think it will be just “up our ally.” It will also give me the opportunity to spend some much needed time with my daughter.

So, without much further ado … Listen to her and please tell me what you think.

Teacher Michelle (Quote Blog) here...

It is beautiful music, indeed. I first heard her on radioparadise.com (the very best, nar none, internet radio station ever) and I looked back on my ratings to see which of hers I had given a number to (scale of 1-10):

Gravity - 9
Soon Love Soon - 8
Feather Moon - 8

Some other artists that I discovered and fell in love with also include: Harry Manx, The Wailin' Jennys, Keb Mo, Taj Mahal, Aimee Mann, Nick Cave, and John Hiatt. If I had heard them before then I hadn't paid attention and it was my loss.

I have always loved Crowded House, Sarah McLachlan, Mark Knopfler, and Chris Isaak and they are also well played here.

I have fairly eclectic tastes in music and have spent a small fortune in buying what I like. Music, for me, is darn near a spiritual thing since it speaks to my heart and soul.

I hope that you enjoy that concert! Make sure you share afterwards!

p.s. - If you follow my profile to my personal blog then you will see the current playlist in the sidebar. It really is an awesome station!

A 4 hour drive with your daughter is what every dad needs! Thanks for stopping by my blog and commenting.

I have vast musical tastes and am currently really into Capitol's great Ultra Lounge series of 60s bachelor pad and lounge music. It's very relaxing for me.

I can't access it unfortunately. Perhaps it doesn't like my Mac. I'll try later on my PC and see if I can hear it.

Thanks for stopping by my blog :)

Her music is inspiring. I know some people who may be getting some early Christmas presents. Me included.

Thanks for stopping by my blog.

How wonderful Dave that you and your daughter have found a common bond in music ...and such beautiful music. I know you will enjoy the concert tremendously. Music can and does speak to the soul as Just Michelle has so elegantly mentioned. I have recently been enjoying the astonishing instrumentals of Keiko Matsui of which I now have a substantial collection of.

I'm really impressed by anybody that can sing and play the piano at the same time, as I have trouble walking and talking simultanously. I bought my wife Tori Amos's album a few years ago - Under the Pink - because I was so impressed with this attribute playing and singing, not walking / talking - Lovely, gentle music - .

Though I remember wife replying " It's because she's a redhead isn't it ? ".

This ones going on my birthday list, which is getting longer.

Sorry for the late post but did not have opportunity to listen to the music earlier. I think you should be very proud of your daughter's choice of music. She knows herself and her preferences instead of following the crowd which is unfortunately too common nowadays. Have a good trip and concert.

Apart from Björk, I have never heard about any of the artists you mention.
I must confess I listen exclusively to classical music :)
But I love to discover new things, so thank you for this opportunity to listen to a delightful voice.

The piano was very passionate in this song. Perfect listening for early morning working. A beautiful voice too. I had to google the lyrics to understand it better. A very passionate & somewhat sad song. I'm going to check out a few of the others because I'd like to hear more of her songs. Thanks so much for sharing something new!

Awesome that you & your daughter can share this. My dad & I have a tradition of going to the symphony, usually we go to the Nutcracker performance together, sometimes just the symphony. I love that its something for just the two of us as I'm sure you & your daughter will also love!

Hi dave, I'm trying it on my pc and it works fine. I had a feeling it just wasn't Mac compatible.

Lovely voice, I like it a lot - will have to look out for more.
